About Orthotics
The use and application of orthopedic devices (Orthotics) can vary widely depending upon the age, diagnosis, and functional abilities of the individual being treated. The purpose and goals of orthoses are to provide stability, optimize standing and/or gait, postural support, and limit the deformity and long-term effects of commonly seen pathologies in the pediatric population. They can range from simple prefabricated supports to complex custom-molded devices, determined by the immediate needs and long-term goals of the patient and family. Orthoses are most effective when used in conjunction with appropriate therapies and consistent with the recommendations of the child’s pediatrician and medical team. Clear communication between families and the healthcare team is essential to ensure the best possible outcomes.
All orthoses, whether custom made or prefabricated, require a doctor’s order (prescription) and documentation connected to an in-person or zoom visit. Once we have obtained this information and relevant personal demographic/insurance details we can schedule an initial appointment to evaluate, measure, and/or take a mold for the device to be provided. There will normally be a minimum of two scheduled appointments for prefabricated devices (evaluation/delivery) and three for custom-molded orthoses (evaluation/delivery/follow up). Any device may require continuing follow up and adjustment appointments as kids grow, a normal and expected aspect of orthotic care and built into the cost of the orthosis/orthoses for up to 90 days post-delivery.
